Australia Phasing Out Incandescent Bulbs
Australia plans to phase out incandescent bulbs by 2010 in efforts to become the world’s first national government to phase out incandescent light bulbs in favor for the energy efficient compact fluorescent bulbs (CFLs) which use about 80% less electricity to produce the same amount of light.
By removing incandescents by 2010, Australia is hoping to remove four million metric tons a year by 2015. The minister, Malcolm Turnbull is urging other nations to follow suit in banning traditional bulbs. Removing incandescents across the world would potentially reduce consumption of electricity by five times Australia’s annual consumption.
