April 22, 2009 marks the 39th annual Earth Day here in the U.S. and there are many events, festivals and celebrations planned around the nation throughout the week. For residents of the Greater Atlanta metro area, there are plenty of options for all ages and interests.

Georgia Tech Earth Day Celebration - April 17th, 2009

The 12th annual Earth Day celebration at Georgia Tech is part of their “Think Green” week (Monday April 13 - Friday April 17, 2009) where this year’s theme is “Lead the way - Tomorrow is Today.” The weeklong schedule of eco-friendly events includes a Green Rally, a sustainable fashion show, an environmental justice panel discussion, as well as a battle of the bands featuring a solar-powered stage. Atlanta Dogwood Festival - April 17 - 19th , 2009

The 73rd annual Atlanta Dogwood Festival at Piedmont Park will feature music, art and delicious foods. Art lovers will enjoy the International Dogwood Festival Juried Art Show, which includes virtually all forms of art including sculpture, painting, pottery, jewelry, photography and more. Keep Atlanta Beautiful BeltLine Cleanup - April 18th, 2009

Join other Atlanta volunteers to clear the BeltLine of litter and invasive plants from Freedom Parkway to Dekalb Avenue as a step towards creating a useable connection from Inman Park and Old Fourth Ward up to Piedmont Park. SweetWater 420 Fest 5k - April 18th, 2009

Located in historic Candler Park, the 5th annual Sweetwater 420 Fest features live music, delicious beer and environmental education opportunities. SweetWater’s “Planet 420″ village will have yoga classes, massage therapy, and workshops on solar power, Southeastern climate issues, and ways to make your home and community more environmentally friendly. 21+ can purchase a $5 wristband with valid ID to responsibly enjoy Sweetwater beer and wine. Earth Day Kids Fest at the Chattahoochee Nature Center - April 18th, 2009

The Chattahoochee Nature Center along with the Captain Planet foundation are sponsoring a festival geared towards helping kids explore ways to protect the planet and connect with nature.
