Cool Trees Offered By California’s Shade Tree Program

The “Cool Communities Shade Tree Program” held by the California Center for Sustainable Energy is geared towards maximizing energy savings by planting free trees to shade homes.

Residents of Orange County, San Diego County, public agencies and non-profit organizations can receive full-sized, 15-gallon trees for their home if built before 1994. The program plans to end very soon and the application deadline is December 15th, 2007.

Only SDG&E customers are eligible to apply for 10 of the 14,000 shade trees (list of tree types is on their site). Once approved, you need to attend a neighborhood workshop and pick up the trees at a nearby nursery or schedule a delivery. Sometimes they will even plant it for you!
