MagLev’s Wind Turbine Is Real

MagLev’s wind turbine concept, is no longer just that. It has entered production, possibly being the most revolutionary for wind energy.

Currently the largest wind turbines in the world only produce 5 megawatts of power, but this massive wind turbine is expected to generate one full gigawatt of clean power - enough energy to supply to 750,000 homes. MagLev Wind Turbine Technologies, an Arizona-based company, claims that it will deliver clean power for less than one cent per kilowatt hour and create energy even at low speeds of 3mph.

Amazingly, this wind technology boosts generation capacity by as much as 20% over traditional wind turbines and decreasing operational costs by 50%.

It’s estimated the colossal structure would occupy 100 acres and be several hundred meters high. Although the building will be expensive to build ($53 million), the cost savings of building one huge turbine reduces the cost of construction and maintenance for investors to recoup loses within a year.

This design is interesting;it seems to me that this structure would maximize electrical output from wind input.The land required for the structure seems to be manageable.I live in Manitoba where we export energy to other provinces and to the United States.Most if not all of this energy comes from water.Manitoba is the last of the Prairie Provinces.The installation of this type of windmill would generate a considerable amount of excess energy for sale to our neighbors.

    Same with Nanosolar, anybody heard when the average user is gonna be able to get those thin film panels?

  4. Sorry to say it but this is most likely a big scam to get money out of the pockets of naive investors. The aerodynamic design of this turbine is that of a Sovanius type wind turbine. Savonius type wind turbines have at most half of the aerodynamic efficiency of a propeller type wind turbine.

    The maglev principle can only reduce friction losses, but these are already very small, so you cannot compensate for the primitive aerodynamic design by using maglev bearings.

    If you make things bigger the engineering problems also get bigger. It has taken the entire windenergy industry 20 years to get from 50 kW to 5MW. It is very unlikely that a small company nobody ever heard of can make the step to 1 GW overnight.

    Finally: The only information that exists about this wind turbine is a single press release that has been echoing around on the web. The website of the company is not even accessible to the public.

    Be suspicious, be very suspicious.

  5. They proved this over in china in nov 2007, google maglev wind and tons of articles will pop-up, @pete i dont doubt your knowledge but i aim to bridge your skepticism. The maglev “bearings” dont have contact with any parts, they are rare earth mags which do not require electricity to operate. this means that winds as slow as 1.5mt/sec will generate electricity. Also the surface area to catch wind is greater than other turbines due to its height.

  12. It now read May 2015. Still no Monstrous Maglev Windturbine. I totally stick with Pete: impossible as wind simply doesn’t carry that amount of energy (considering manageable size buildings). Although maglev may potentially reduce maintenance costs, it will not reduce friction in such a dramatic way that it becomes much more efficient. On the contrary, Vertical Axis Wind Turbines are less efficient as half of these turbines are necessarily running against the wind. Not even interesting to follow, unless you like to read up about scams.
