Google is getting involved in developing electric vehicles capable of getting 70 to 100 miles per gallon. Google’s philanthropic part, Google.org, aims to advance the development of hybrid electric vehicles called the RechargeIT.

The special highlight to the project is aiming to develop a vehicle-to-grid technology to allow the the cars to sell their stored power to the nation’s electricity during high peak demands. It would dramatically increase the efficiency of the energy nation’s system.

One million in Google grants went to Brookings Institution to run a conference on the technology and promote plug-in cars. Google is inviting applicants to bid for another $10 million in funding towards furthering plug-in development.
