Green Dishes For A Buck?

g2bgOr A Buck Toward A Greener Planet?

Purely by accident today, I came across a new green product. It’s made by a company called Power X Green and the product is Natural Tropics Dishwashing Liquid (for hand washing). According to the label it is biodegradable, natural, not tested on animals and packaged in recyclable plastic. The bottle declares the dish liquid to be phosphorus, enzyme, and bleach-free. And we didn’t find it in a high-brow store, either. This bottle is straight off the shelf of the local Dollar Mart.

The claims made about its cleaning power are very strong indeed: “Tough stains and grease easily rinse away…” To be honest, I’m not quite sure what the coconut-based ingredients really are, aside from biodegradable. It says there are “anionic and…nonionic agents in a natural buffer system with water conditioning agent”, but beyond the vague notion those have something to do with chemistry and charged atoms, I don’t know how those things relate to dish detergent. A quick web search tells me they are fairly common in “green” cleaning products.

However, what ultimately sold me was the caution, the portion about what to do if you find yourself swallowing a mouthful of the stuff. Apparently, you won’t need to contact your friendly neighborhood poison control center. No, all that is required if you ingest Power X Green Natural Tropics Dishwashing Liquid is…ready?

…a glass of water. That’s it. Got it in your eyes? Flush with water. In your belly? Drink some water to dilute it. Just don’t mix it with bleach and you’re golden. A material safety data sheet on another Power X Green cleaner (the only PXG info I was able to locate online) tells essentially the same story.

Naturally (heh), I had to try it right away. That sink full of dishes certainly wasn’t going to get clean without some kind of cleaner. I opened the bottle and it smelled like a mix between suntan oil and bubble gum. Not odors I associate with dishes, but pleasant, nonetheless. I added maybe half a teaspoon to the sink and turned on the water.

I am not sure what I expected, really, but it was not the bright, bubbly suds that immerged from the water. That was a nice surprise. And it proceeded to tackle spaghetti sauce. On plastic. Without leaving a greasy residue on the dishes. Color Power X Green - and me impressed.

On the other hand, I’ve since realized that the caution is the same on the bottle of Dawn - just drink water. And the biodegradable anionic part of the ingredients is similar.  On top of that, Dawn is currently donating $1 to wildlife conservation for every bottle purchased.  Which only goes to show that going green is not the limiting prospect it once was.  We’ve got plenty of green choices these days, and it doesn’t always mean having to give up old stand-bys that we loved.
