Students from the University of Michigan created a solar car named Continuum capable of speeds of 90 mph. The spacey looking solar car was displayed in a miniature version at the Detroit Auto Show.
The vehicle has evolved past a few test versions, with initially having the driver in a lay down position to improve aerodynamics and reduce drag. The latest version has the driver sitting up with a revision to the solar cell size. The cells were reduced but equipped with a clever solar energy collecting system that allows sunlight to be concentrated on unique high yield solar cells using parabolic mirrors.
