I got news the other day that Oceans from DisneyNature will be released on Earth Day 2010. I’m really excited about this, not only because I expect it will be every bit as captivating and utterly gorgeous as Earth was, but also because, as they did with Earth, they are going to use a portion of the ticket sales for the greater, greener good!
Through the “See OCEANS, Save Oceans” initiative, DisneyNature will donate a portion of each ticket sold during opening week (4/22/10-4/28/10) to the Nature Conservancy for their efforts to establish protected marine areas for the coral reefs around the Bahamas.
This time around the directors are Jacques Perrin and Jacques Cluzaud. Dr. Sylvia Earle of National Geographic says that their work on Oceans “captures the spirit, the very essence of the sea.” According to DisneyNature’s press release, Earth “garnered a record-breaking opening weekend for a nature documentary. On its opening day, the film also broke the single-day box-office record for a nature documentary.” Here is hoping that Oceans can do nearly as well, if not better, and save as many reefs as Earth planted trees.
