SPRANQ, a Dutch company has developed a new font that can cut ink usage by 15%. The Ecofont has a “swiss cheese” design. The size and the outline of the letters are the same but there are little holes in the letters. According to company co-founder Gerjon Zomer,“the font isn’t beautiful, but it could be adequate for personal use or for internal use at a company.” SPRANQ offers a free download of the font at this site.
They are not trying to make a profit from the font. According to Zomer, the company is inviting developers to improve the Ecofont further under a free, open-source model.” An Arabic and Hebrew versions are already under development.
