Tilting Windows Saves Energy

tilting_windows.jpg

During the summer, the sun sits high in the sky but low in the winter. Designers of Greenhouses know that the more perpendicular the sun is to the glass, the more sunlight that filters in instead of being reflected away.

Architect Jeanne Gang of Chicago’s Studio Gang has applied this knowledge of angling windows to save energy to heat and cool a rooms for the new condo in Chicago’s Hyde Park. The windows were angled until they didn’t overheat the rooms, which happened to be at exactly 71 degrees.

The brilliant design creates less need for air conditioning in the summer and receives the heat gain in the winter!
