Re-use an Old Vinyl Shower Curtain

Whenever we replace the old vinyl shower curtain with a new one, we feel guilty just tossing it in the trash.  We found the following suggestions to re-use a vinyl shower curtain on Apartment Therapy.

• As a tarp beneath a picnic blanket or a tent while camping
• To protect the table when crafting, especially when using glue, paint or other messy materials
• To re-sew into a rain poncho or smock
• As a tarp for outdoor furniture and the lawn mower, to protect from the rain
• Lining car seats when transporting animals
• In the trunk of a car when hauling messy loads
• As a tablecloth at a picnic table

Before re-using, disinfect your shower curtain in the washing machine with warm water and detergent. Be sure to wash it with a couple of towels so that the curtain has something to grab onto for a thorough cleaning. Then hang to air dry.

The locking plastic shower curtain rings can also be re-purposed. Some people have used them as:
• key rings
• a carabineer to attach items like shoes to a backpack
• a lock to prevent small children and animals from getting into cabinets

  1. Bravo for sharing these much use, yet rarely written, ideas for not trashing an old shower curtain. My first shower curtain is still packed with our tent, used each time as a ground tart. Why buy a special, high-priced one at a camping store, when you have one in the bathroom waiting to be put to work.

  2. You can also cut it up and sew it into reusable shopping bags. Search the web for patterns. However, cutting a couple squares or rectangles and a 6 inch wide strip to go around the sides and the bottom is pretty simple. Handles are just 2 - 5 inch strip with the sides folded to the center then folded again and sewn to keep it closed. Then sew one on each side. You can get 2 or 3 shopping bags from one shower curtain and you will use fewer plastic or paper bags when shopping.

  3. Picnics are simply fun. It is definitely wise to save for the rainy days, considering the current economy. Picnics are great way to have a staycation.. Not to mention, that kids love to be outdoors all the time. It’s a perfect combination. Get your picnic baskets and be delighted.
