I know this will come as a rudely premature warning to those up North, but to my fellow Arizonans: summer is officially on the way! With temperatures climbing into the 80s lately, many of us have found ourselves traipsing outside to do the annual weeding of the garden and yard. If you’ve been dismayed to find that the insects have taken up residence and you’re looking for a natural way to discourage these pests, essential oils are a great solution.
The best essential oils for repelling bugs are generally thought to be clove oil, citronella (Be careful! This one can be a skin irritant), lavender or peppermint. Put a few drops on a cotton balls or other piece of rag or fabric and lay them around the boundaries of your beds or planters, and the insects will stay away.
Look for essential oils at many local health stores. If you live in Phoenix, the health food store Sprouts has a great collection of high quality oils for good prices.
