Here are some easy and natural ways to clean [1] your home - it’s amazing how little is needed!

Clean Metal Surfaces:

Iron - (Cooking Pans that seem a bit rusty): You can clean these with a damp cloth and steel wool. Wipe down the item with a cloth, scrub lightly with the steel wool, then rinse and dry. Run a little vegetable oil to prevent further rusting.

Chrome: Just combine 1 tablespoon of ammonia with 1 pint of water. Rub the mixture on the chrome and the dirt will come right off.

Silver: Put some water in a pan with 2-3 teaspoons of washing soda and bring to a simmer. Throw in a little piece of aluminum foil and then dip your silver into the mix. Pull the item out, dry it off and shine it with a rag.

Pewter: Wash in warm soapy water, rinse, polish with a cloth.

Brass & Cooper: Combine a few tablespoons of lemon juice and 1 tablespoon of baking soda [2]. Rub the mixture on then polish it off. If the items are heavily soiled, then soak them in hot vinegar and some table salt. Take them out when when the shine starts showing up on its down. You may also rub lemon on the brass and copper to get into any grooves - make sure to wipe it off once it’s clean.

Clean Wood Floors:

Mix a small amount of vinegar with a bucket of warm water, then use to clean the floor. Make sure to not use too much water on the wood, as it could damage it. If you have natural unsealed wood floors, you can use linseed oil with a rag to make them shine. Allow it to soak in for awhile and then mop it up with a little more oil. For sealed floors, use 1 part white vinegar to 1 part vegetable oil to make it shine. Rub it into the floor with a rag as if you’re polishing your car.

Clean Appliances:

Ovens: Rub the inside of the oven with wet steel wool to remove tough stuff. Sprinkle baking soda throughout the oven. Let it sit for a few minutes, then wipe it clean with a wet rag.

Microwaves: Mix 1/2 water with a few teaspoons of baking soda in a microwave safe bowl. Put the bowl in the microwave and run for 2 minutes. Take the bowl and wipe it clean with a rag. Every spot should come out!

Coffee Makers: When the coffee maker is empty, pour in a mix of 1 cup white vinegar and some hot water to fill it up to the top. Run the coffee maker (as if you’re making coffee). Once the cycle has finished, run it twice more with just plain water to rinse out the vinegar and any build up left insde.

Refrigerators: Make a paste from baking soda and water (equal parts of both) and scrub. Wipe down with a clean cloth and it will be clean.

Removing Stains:

White Items: Apply white vinegar or lemon juice to stained area. Allow it to soak, then wash as normal.

Wine Spills: Dump salt on stained area right away which will absorb a lot of moisture before it sets. Wash as normal ASAP.

Prolonged Dark Stains: Soak in a bowl of glycerine (available from local grocery or natural store). Soak the clothes for half an hour and then wash.

Red wine spills on carpet: Get out as much as you can with wash cloth, then quickly pour white vinegar on the spot. Let it soak, then rinse out with wet rag.

Grass Stains: Soak the clothing in glycerine or washing soda prior to washing.

Remove Mold in Bathroom:

Mix 2 ounces of Borax and a cup of white vinegar to make a spray to apply directly at the mold. Spray it, leave it for 30-60 minutes, then wipe it. You can also periodically spray the moldy areas with vinegar and let it sit there and soak. The vinegar will kill the mold and halt the growth of new mold.

Unclogging Showerhead:

Remove the showerhead, and sit in a bowl filled with an inch of vinegar. After one hour, remove it from the bowl and run water through it for a few minutes. Put it back in the shower.

Remove Rust:

Sprinkle some salt on the rusty area and put some lime juice on top of the salt (not too much that the salt floats away). Leave it for a few hours and come back with a scrubber. It won’t take much effort to remove the rust.

Cleaning the toilet:

Lemon juice will do the trick.

Mix 1 cup of Borax with 1/4-1/2 cup of lemon juice or vinegar. Spread the paste into the toilet bowl and let it sit for awhile. Later come back and scrub it with a scrubbing sponge.

Polish Wood:

Mix 3 cups of water, 4 tablespoons of olive oil and 2 tablespoons of white vinegar and place it into a spray bottle. Shake the bottle to mix ingredients. Test the spray prior to spraying it on wood, so that you do not damage the wood.

Natural Disinfecting:

Add 1 teaspoon of tree oil to a gallon of water to wash windows, floors and toilets to get rid of germs.

To get rid of bugs, place a drop of tea iol near where they are coming in.

Mix a few drops of tea tree oil with some water into a spray bottle to clean mold in a bathroom or clean the floor after your pet has had an accident.

Unclog Shower Drain:

Put dry baking soda down the drain (3/4 cup). Pour 1/2 cup of vinegar down the drain after the baking soda and make sure to cover the drain immediately afterwards with a rag or plug, so nothing can escape. Leave the mixture in the drain for about 30 minutes. After 30 minutes, remove the plug and slowly plug hot water into the drain. If your drain doesn’t drain smoothly, repeat the process.
