Water Conservation Comes to Facebook

Green Lifestyles - Siemens is challenging Facebook users to commit to save 50 million gallons of water annually, through their Personal Water Footprint CalculatorFacebook is used for many things, but can it be used for saving water? Siemens is challenging Facebook users to commit to save 50 million gallons of water annually, through their Personal Water Footprint Calculator
on Facebook.

Built by Friend2Friend, through agency SocialTyze, this simple quiz tells you how much water you consume annually, and then it does more: it asks you to commit to saving water.

Initially released for World Water Day on March 22nd, Siemens had to increase their goal to saving 3 million gallons of water, as their initial goal of 1 million gallons was quickly exceeded.

After realizing the popularity of the application, Siemens invested in improvements to make it even more useful. To address this need, Friend2Friend developed a more personalized experience, showing users their water footprint details, their commitments, and water-saving tips tailored just for them.

Siemens launched the upgraded app and is encouraging more users to make their own commitment and to spread the word to their Facebook network to reach the new goal: 50 million gallons. “It’s great to see Siemens positioned in social media as a brand supporting important causes, such as water conservation. We also hope to communicate through the application and fanpage that Siemens is part of the answer to some of the toughest questions society is facing these days.” said Stefan Heeke, Director Interactive Communications at Siemens Corporation.

Will making a commitment on Facebook actually save water? “Of course, what people say and what they do isn’t always the same,” comments Roger Katz, CEO of Friend2Friend. “But the average time spent on this application is 3 minutes, about six times the length of a television commercial. During that time users are thinking about their own water-wise habits and seeing conservation tips that specifically address their own areas of water consumption. They also make a commitment publicly, in front of their friends. Those are exactly the kinds of interactions that get people to start making changes in their lives.”

As a manufacturer of water treatment technology for communities and industry, Siemens Water Technologies understands the value of water to daily life. By sponsoring this application, they can promote the importance of water that’s so clear to them in their daily work, but sometimes not so clear to consumers.

“We hope to increase consumer awareness of the work Siemens has done to create more efficient water systems and develop new ways to conserve and recycle water,” commented Bill Scully, Dir. eMarketing of Siemens Water Technologies. So will the app generate a commitment to save 50 million gallons of water? Well, that’s up to Facebook users-like you. If you haven’t make a commitment yet, now’s the time. Do your part at http://apps.facebook.com/watercalculator.
